Program Description / Purpose: The Trust's environment grants are made to protect and enhance the natural and urban environment, and to conserve New England's natural resources. The Trust is interested in supporting environmental projects which will have a positive impact on: protection of critical natural resources; energy conservation; public awareness of the critical environmental issues facing the region; and protection of the public's health, especially in low- income or minority communities.
Program Requirements / Restrictions: The Trust does not normally provide support for: buildings, equipment or land purchases, endowments, scholarship funds or fundraising activities, loans to charitable organizations, deficits, normal operating budgets where the Trust may become the organization’s predominant source of support, or programs usually supported by the public sector.

Example of Funded Projects
Natural Resources Council of Maine, Penobscot River Restoration Project: $23,500 to support the restoration migratory fisheries on the Penobscot River and conduct ecological, social, tribal and economic restoration.

GrowSmart Rhode Island: $100,000 for policy reform activities, focused on promoting local/state growth management, economic development, and innovative land use, affordable housing, and brownfields redevelopment policies at the state and local level (Both grants were in 2003).
