Program Description / Purpose: Trailnet encourage Active Living throughout the St. Louis bi-state region as a way of life that integrates physical activity into daily routines, resulting in healthy individuals, a healthy environment and healthy communities. We accomplish this as follows:
Through Bicycle Rides and Recreational Events, we provide opportunities that promote physical activity and health. These include a three-season schedule of supported bicycle rides, the annual conservation education program, Eagle Days on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge and the Pedal in our Parks Family Bicycle Ride Series, designed to attract novice riders and families and introduce them to bicycling.
Through public programming, we promote Transportation Alternatives that result in improved air quality, decreased roadway congestion and more opportunities for active routine travel. Initiatives include promotion of National Bike Month in May and Safe Routes to School, a volunteer-driven program designed to resurrect walking and biking to school as a readily accessible exercise program for youth.
Through Community Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning, we provide services and education that result in better and safer trails, streets and sidewalks, expanding opportunities for active routine travel and recreation. We are developing Bicycle/Pedestrian Facilities Plans for communities in Missouri and Illinois.
Through public-private partnerships, we convene and facilitate the planning, design and improvement of regional multi-use Trails, Greenways and Bicycle/Pedestrian Compatible Roadways.
Through Public Outreach and Advocacy, we promote trails and greenways, physical activity, safe streets and the use of non-motorized transportation alternatives. In 2005, we launched our award-winning website at www.trailnet.org, completely redesigned to better serve the public.
