Program Description / Purpose: EPA's brownfield initiative helps communities revitalize brownfields both environmentally and economically, mitigate potential health risks, and restore economic vitality to areas where brownfields exist. EPA defines brownfields as abandoned, idled, or underused industrial and commercial facilities where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by environmental contamination. Pilot projects are directed toward environmental activities primarily to cleanup , such as site assessments, site identification, site characterization, and site response or cleanup planning.
Program Requirements / Restrictions: Some sites are excluded from the definition of a brownfield site unless EPA makes a site-specific funding determination that allows grant funds to be used at that site.
