Earth Force engages youth through three programs: CAPS, GREEN and Earth Force After School.
Community Action and Problem Solving (CAPS)
Community Action and Problem Solving (CAPS) combines the best practices of environmental education, civic engagement and service learning. Using CAPS materials, middle school youth discover and implement lasting solutions to environmental issues in their community.
Earth Force has established eight local sites across the country to implement CAPS. For more information call (703) 299-9400, email: earthforce@earthforce.org or visit http://www.earthforce.org
GREEN
The Global Rivers Environmental Education Network (GREEN) helps young people protect the rivers, streams and other vital water resources in their communities. This program merges hands-on, scientific learning with civic action. GREEN offers educators and watershed organizations a family of integrated services and tools to engage youth in improving their water resources. The full spectrum of integrated GREEN tools is useful to anyone looking to monitor and protect rivers, streams, lakes and oceans everywhere. They work together to assist youth, educators and watershed organizations work effectively at each step of the protection process. Check out the GREEN program at http://www.earthforce.org/section/programs/green.
Earth Force After School
Earth Force After School is an innovative program that provides students with a fun way to spend the hours after school. Youth explore their environment and work with community leaders to create long-term improvements to the world around them. The program adapts the Earth Force community action and problem-solving model for out-of-school settings. Use it to enhance the skills that students learn in the classroom with real-life experience. Central to the program is a self-contained kit that provides educators with step-by-step instructions and activities in guiding youth through a community action and problem-solving project. Sample CAPS Projects
Endangered Species Protection:Students in West Palm Beach, FL, are working to increase the survival rate of sea turtles by posting county-made public awareness signs at local beaches.
Health Hazards: Students at Villa Maria Academy in Erie, PA, have been working after school since October '97 to better inform the community about the health hazards of eating Lake Erie fish. They have prepared an informational pamphlet and continue to work with the Pennsylvania Great Lakes Office to do more to educate the public about this fish advisory. This includes translating the brochure into languages common to "bucket anglers" and locating distribution
Wildlife Habitat and Greenspace: Walnut Creek Middle School students, in Millcreek PA, are creating a wildlife habitat near their schools to connect to Greenway Train that runs through Asbury Woods and the Brown's farm property. Native plants and nesting boxes designed and built by students will be featured. They will use this project to promote local policy changes to encourage green space in future development plans.
